Interview Bouncing Souls

You are recording your new album at the moment. What can we expect from it?

Bryan: It´s pretty good!
Pete: Yeah! It´s awesome! I am actually really stoked about it so it´s hard not to be like “Oh my God, it is so good!”.
Bryan: But it is our best record! Best record maybe ever!

Better than everything?

Pete: Ja.

Better than Elvis and AC/DC?

Bryan: No, maybe not better than AC/DC…

But it is easy to say that it is the best record because you probably say it after every record.

Bryan: The last record we released was just a collection of songs. It wasn´t like one big gust of inspiration. It´s a sort of different thing like we released one song per month for an entire year and it was kind of more mad. We were never like “This is the best record ever!” like now.

Okay.

Bryan: Well, we will give you a better answer: It is harder, it´s more aggressive. It has ten songs. Two of them are like beautiful. Seven of them are like fucking hard and one is about fun. It´s called “We Love Fun”.

(laughs) Oh really?

Bryan: Yes! It is a fun song. It´s like a beer-drinking song.
Pete: Everybody loves fun.
Bryan: It´s like the ultimate party song perhaps.
Pete: It is a dancer song. It´s like guys and girls dancing…Guys and guys dancing! We don´t judge.

There were four years between ‘The Gold Record’ and ‘Ghosts On The Boardwalk’. What did you do during this time?

Bryan: I guess we just toured all the time you know.
Pete: We had a little time off after the tour. We didn´t tour a lot in 2007.
Bryan: Yeah I think that was the point on which we sort of went to our separate corners and develop a little bit of personal life. We went home. And now we are like “Fuck that!” and just write a record.

Is it routine to play live after all those years or are you still excited?

Pete: Still excited!
Bryan: Yeah, that´s the trick about taking time off you know. We stay excited that way.

How important are social networks like Facebook and Twitter for you?

Pete: I think it´s a new way of doing everything, you know. Like sending “We have a new record” and the people know about it in a second. We always throw out postcards and that takes days and days and days.

Do you think that you have more fans now because it is easier to reach more people?

Bryan: It is a thing you can hardly put a finger on especially now on the internet.
Pete: Maybe. Maybe we have tons of people who care all over the world.
Bryan: But we don´t waste too much time keep tracking and count you know. We just do our thing over in our corner. And then we go on tour and a lot of people show up or not that many and that´s how we know.

If you met the Bouncing Souls from 1989, what piece of advice would you give them?

Pete: Wow, that´s a good question…
Bryan: That´s a great question! Damn. Matt (Dropkick Murphys) said you guys were good.

Yeah, we know, we are...awesome…

Bryan: So you know you are good, okay!

(singing) We looove being good!

Pete: What would I tell myself…I was 19 years old.
Bryan: Fuck man…I wouldn´t change a thing. I would tell myself to do anything. Mistakes included. I think everything went perfectly.
Pete: We are doing a lot of fun shit you know. I wouldn´t change a lot.
Bryan: Take singing lessons maybe. I don´t know.
Pete: That´s a good question, I am shy about an answer.

We give you like two days to think about it and then you can tweet it to us.

Pete: Okay, it´s our homework. 500 words or less…
Bryan: We love homework!

Is there a difference between the shows in Germany and the States?

Pete: The main idea is that tons of kids come and have fun together. There are different things everywhere you go. Like culture differences.
Bryan: As far as like the show itself it feels kind of the same because the music is the same so the vibe is the same. Pretty good, both places. People dance, when someone falls people pick him up, it´s good.

But a lot of bands say that people in Germany are a little bit…how to say…harder to impress.

Bryan: It´s kind of like an old cliché. We´ve been coming here so long that I think we have finally no one just standing around. That´s not always like because these people are German. Because maybe you keep coming back and do this more times and warm people to do it. That´s what we said about New York City, too. And then we started going there and fucking own that town.
Pete: Give them a few beers and make some good music and everybody is having a good time.
Bryan: Beer is better here though. I am not gonna lie.

What´s your favorite beer?

Bryan: I like Augustiner.

[Then Brian asked us if we want to see the artwork for the new album cover. And hell yeah, of course we wanted to!]

So “Comet” is the name of the new record?

Bryan: Yeah!

Do you know when it will be released yet?

Bryan: Is it June 12th?
Pete: Yes, it´s June 12th.
Bryan: It´s taken by me to finish the artwork on time. But the music is done. So yes, June 12th. We thought the release date of the Gold Record was 6-6-6 you know, so this is 6-12-12. Not that this means anything…
Pete: It´s just the release date. That´s all.

Did your life on tour change over the years?

Pete: It hasn´t much I guess.
Bryan: We tour in Europe the same way we always have. We have a bus, rent a backline and sleep on the bus. Don´t get hotels because we don´t need them. All the venues here have showers and make delicious food for you. And it´s pretty comfortable to tour in Europe.
Pete: But the older we get we´re trying to live a little bit healthier. We try not to drink, smoke and eat at fucking Mc Donalds.
Bryan: A straight up punishment. We´ve taken that down from like a seven to ten.
Pete: We hold the level on a seven. The level of badness.

So seven is the level of badness?

Bryan: Seven is bad. What would you say Pete?
Pete: Ten is the level of real badness!
Bryan: Seven is like...
Pete: It´s medium fun.

So medium fun is more like five?
Bryan: Five is like spit out life. But we don´t speak five.

But you don´t get younger and someday you might be a five…

Pete: No!
Bryan: Then we will fall off a cliff.
Pete: I´ll never get older.

You are like Peter Pan?

Pete: Ja.

So you are Peter Pan? It´s so cool to meet you!

Bryan: Pete Pan.
Pete: It´s your lucky day.

Which records do you listen to on tour?

Bryan: I am on a Bronx trip for like approximately two years now. Black Flag. I got a Black Flag Tattoo by Bill Stevenson of Black Flag. He never tattooed in his life and I think he actually tattooed my bone. I´ve got the Milo, too but it was done by a professional. But this was done by a member of Black Flag. So it´s the most Black Flag Tattoo a Black Flag Tattoo can be. And it´s gonna health.

What is the essence of a good song in your opinion?

Pete: Inspired. For the last record we wanted every song to be inspired for everybody.
Bryan: Yeah. Honesty. Direct honesty. I think they are connected.

So your plan after this tour is to finish the record and then tour again I guess?

Pete: We will be home for one and a half month and then we come back here and do some festivals. And then we tour some more.
Bryan: Yes. We tour the States. We gonna be here like three times this year.

Like here “here” or here “Germany”?

Peter: Here Germany.

We hope that you come back to Hanover again. Hanover is like a nine!

Bryan: On the fun-line?

Yes! When you once visited Hanover, you will never forget it.

Bryan: I will remember every minute right now.

You will remember to be fucking wasted in Hanover. Because everybody gets wasted in Hanover.

Pete: We have to join you tonight!

[Bryan showed us a new song again]

I like it!

Bryan: You like it? Thanks! I can´t wait for people to hear this record, I am serious man. We just came from the studio and flew here yesterday.

So you probably go on stage tonight and…

Bryan: Yeah, hold the phone on the microphone. Check-this-out!
